Manufacturing Process of Curved Extrusions for Aluminum

ABSTRACT --- A need to reduce fuel consumption and a growing variety of vehicle
designs are leading to the use of lightweight automotive bodywork. For bodywork with
a space-frame construction, conventionally curved profiles (manufactured using the
process chain comprising extrusion, stretching and bending) are used. Where
necessary, to comply with tolerances, the profiles are then hydro-formed (IHU). A new
and innovative forming process, known as “rounding during extrusion" allows profiles
with no spring-back to be manufactured. Such profiles have highly accurate contours.
The European Patent EP 0706 843 B1 “Method and device for the production of curved
work pieces” (Patent holder: Erbslöh AG) forms the basis of the BMBF-joint research
project “rounding during extrusion” (Duration: 01/03/2001 – 31/12/2004). The aim of the
project is to transform the concept behind the patent into a manufacturing process that
is ready for use by the end of 2004.
