ABSTRACT --- The Aluminum Association’s Aluminum Design Manual [1] provides
design rules for aluminum structural applications including extrusions. Part I of
the Manual, The Specification for Aluminum Structures, contains methods for
determining the strength of extruded members in tension, compression, bending,
and shear. Revisions to the 2000 edition of the Manual will result in a number of
changes to the methods used to predict the strength of extruded members. This
paper discusses these changes and the finite strip method, which is a
revolutionary way to determine the compressive and bending strength of
extruded members. It also is especially useful for shapes with complex cross
sections.
