ABSTRACT --- There is much misunderstanding within the fabrication industry related
to the difficulties and practicality of welding aluminum. To further promote the use of
aluminum extrusions as an acceptable replacement for steel within the welding
fabrication industry, we need to dispel the misconception that aluminum is more difficult
to weld than steel. The promotion of aluminum as a welded fabrication material can be
best achieved through education. This education should be directed towards a number
of areas within and around the industry including: technical training in aluminum
welding technology; prospective end users who order a welding fabricated product and
should stipulate the correct aluminum welding specification; and the manufacturer who
needs to understand the technology available to assist them in efficiently producing a
welded product from this material.
