Extrud-AL™ - An Alternative Approach to Nitrogen Die Cooling

ABSTRACT --- A unique approach to the use of inert gas(es) in the aluminum extrusion
process is presented. By combining expertise in understanding the interactions of the
atmosphere, aluminum metal, and the resultant oxides, a process for controlling these
products of reaction has been developed which greatly reduces or eliminates their effects.
Unlike the 1980’s vintage die cooling with nitrogen, this approach focuses on: optimization of
gas usage, efficacy of delivery system, reducing extrusion tooling rework and innate die
breakage, extending die run life, and maximization of return. This paper will describe Air
Liquide’s Extrud-AL technology and some recent results.
