ABSTRACT --- Current technologies for the surface treatment of aluminum extrusion
dies are the nitration method and the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and physical
vapor deposition (PVD) coating technology. This paper shows the advantages and
applications of CVD coating systems for extrusion dies. Typical methods of separation
are given together with characteristics of different modern multilayer systems. The
overview of the coating process in the WEFA CVD coating unit gives an insight into the
various production steps and the quality-related features. For quality and product
conformity reasons, different analytical methods that grant a good performance of the
die during extrusion are necessary. The main advantages of CVD coated dies compared
with nitrided dies, like low maintenance and longer lifetime, are listed. Maintenance
procedures for coated dies are given. The economical calculation of the break-even
point of a coated die, compared with an uncoated die, gives the decision-makers in the
extrusion plant a guide for die purchasing.
