ABSTRACT --- Various solid die designs have been studied and the shrinkage values
obtained in these dies analyzed relative to accuracy of aperture size changes during
extrusion of 6xxx billets. The weight per meter of the extrusions was much influenced
by die design, thus affecting the overall recovery of the press. This paper describes
the effect of feeder plate design, pocket control die design, and a double step feeder
design on aperture size of the extrudate. The influence of support tooling is also
considered. A simple chart was developed to allow determination of aperture size of
extrusion dies as a function of CCD (circumscribing circle diameter), extrusion ratio,
extrusion speed, wall thickness, and type of alloy. This chart can be used for
management reviews to check performance of new dies and existing production
