ABSTRACT --- The ever-competitive aluminum extrusion industry is striving to achieve
a goal of zero die trials and running dies right out of the box. This utopian goal has
many advantages to the extruder that would translate into large cost savings and
improved profitability. In reality, die trials will not disappear altogether but the average
number of die trials can be greatly reduced. Achieving this goal will not happen
overnight. A long process of learning the deformation of the shapes as well as flow
characteristics is necessary, along with good information feedback and cooperation
with die suppliers. The application of new scanner type, visual inspection technology
like that of RomiShape® is proving to be the most efficient in the field with numbers to
prove it. This paper will demonstrate results achieved by extruders in reducing die trials
very significantly, working with their die suppliers to improve design and enhancing the
capability of die correctors to correct more efficiently. The study will provide quantitative
information that will enable the reader to project the possibilities of cost savings to his
own plant.
