ABSTRACT --- Tribology (science of friction, lubrication and wear) has long been of both
technical and practical interest to those who study improvements in aluminum extrusion
quality. The functioning of aluminum extrusion technology depends mostly on friction at
the extrusion die-bearing interface affecting die wear and accuracy of the extrusion
shape. High quality extrusion processing would be impossible without this science and
technology, which analyzes the interaction between metal flow and the die-bearing
surface in the extrusion process. Case studies of the wear mechanism applied on an
extrusion die during the manufacture of a hollow aluminum shape will be presented. In
this case study, a series of tests were conducted to study die wear and its effect on
extrusion quality using a hollow extrusion die for a thin walled 6063 hollow extrusion
shape. Extrusions were produced using two different billet lengths with constant billet
temperature and ram speed; and also using two different ram speeds with constant billet
length and temperature respectively. This paper will also describe some of the
fundamental concepts of tribology in aluminum extrusion. In summary, Tribology is very
valuable tool to explore available information that allows aluminum extrusion
manufacturers to make continuous improvements in extrusion quality.
