Integrated Computer-Aided Extrusion Hollow Die Design Methodology

ABSTRACT --- Intensive research has been conducted to fully develop a
comprehensive hollow die design methodology based on profile characteristics,
material limitations, process parameters, and equipment capacity. This
methodology is comprehensive, addressing such areas as process simulation,
determination of optimal extrusion process parameters, automatic port design
and optimal port area calculation, web thickness, welding zone design, optimal
pre-deform pocket for a complicated hollow profile, automatic and repositioning
of multiple hollow cavities, and complete die manufacturing drawing. A
computer system based on this design methodology has been developed for
prompt die design and enhanced extrusion speeds. Shopfloor application has
been made by major extruders worldwide for more than five years; more than 90
percent of dies successfully passed their first die trials.
