ABSTRACT --- There is an increasing demand by both hot metal and remelt cast
house operations to obtain greater returns from their installed plant in productivity and
quality. Increased melting rates, reduced energy consumption, melt loss reduction, and
better alloying efficiency and homogenization are key issues in current focus in a
challenging and competitive marketplace. Forced convectional melting is well
established as a means to improve these aspects of the melting process. Recently the
emergence of electromagnetic pumping technology (EMP) has demonstrated excellent
success in achieving positive results in many aluminum melting environments including
extrusion billet cast houses. This paper will present a technical description and
operational performance of the EMP system with emphasis on melt rate improvement,
metal recovery, and metal bath quality improvements in a variety of aluminum melting
and casting operations. Several prominent case studies are presented.
