ABSTRACT --- Almech is a computer program that predicts the mechanical properties and
the extrudability of 6xxx alloys. The base of the program is a large property database, which
has been experimentally established. The present paper gives an overview of the user
interface and the range of process variables that are taken into account. Examples of
prediction outputs are shown, as well as some examples of how Almech can be used to help
extruders improve their operations. The experimental data in Almech are generated under
such conditions that as much Mg and Si as possible is in solid solution as the profile is being
extruded. A model integrated in Almech may be used to take into account processing
conditions that lead to larger amounts of undissolved Mg2Si-particles, and it is shown through
an example that Almech is a valuable tool for predicting the effect of process variables on
productivity and end product properties. Finally, Almech is used to predict the extrudability
increase that can be achieved by extruding 6060 alloys instead of 6063 alloys with equal
