ABSTRACT --- In the past 15 years, molten metal filtration has become a wellaccepted
process to produce good melt quality for casting extrusion billet. The bonded
particle filter media, which has a substantial history in many aluminum wrought and
cast product applications, has unique features which distinguish it from other filter
types, including superior strength and durability at operating temperatures, long-life
molten aluminum alloy chemical resistance, high thermal conductivity, and a complex
internal structure which enhances filtration efficiency. A new filtering system using this
filter media has been established which affords key advantages. Vertical plate filter
elements are used, versus conventional horizontal filters. This permits easier vessel
cleaning and filter change-out, and saves space and metal discard during alloy change.
Most importantly, with sustained usage (the heated vessel holds a small amount of
metal and the filter remains primed between casts), a substantial reduction in filtration
cost per ton is realized. Additionally, there is a dual-filter staging capability to utilize
two filter grades in tandem. The dual vertical gate filter system’s description, operating
parameters, and results applied to extrusion billet casting will be presented.
