Meeting Today’s Market Challenges Through Strategic Equipment Investments

Nicola Defendi, OMAV SpA

Track: MANAGEMENT ISSUES - Operations Management

ABSTRACT --- Extruders in Europe and North America are facing two major problems: a
weak economy and, at the same time, increased competition from countries with
significantly lower production costs. As a result all are looking for strategies by which they
can remain profitable and competitive. One important issue concerns the role of plant
investment and, in particular, the level of investment and type of equipment which will
make them most competitive against imports from less developed countries, even while
operating at lower production levels. In this paper we explore some of the competitive
issues and strategies, as well as the choice between low-tech and sophisticated extrusion
plant equipment.
