ABSTRACT --- A new concept in the extrusion process—feed-forward instead of
feedback—will be presented in this paper. The feed-forward concept allows simulation
for accurate presale product price quotation; determines the optimal process
parameters, especially critical ones such as extrusion speed, extrusion temperature
and billet size; and provides extrusion process management. Additionally, the feedforward
concept is the foundation for designing the solid, semihollow, and hollow die as
perfectly as possible the first time. The feed-forward process will ensure product
quality, optimal extrusion process, high productivity, and scrap control. This concept
has practical application in the worldwide extrusion industry. It has been demonstrated
that extruder die trial pass-rates increased dramatically from 58 percent to more than
90 percent within six months, with an 8-inch press that extrudes more than 90 percent
industrial application parts.
