The Nine Principles for Best-in-Class Quality

Alexander Daniker and Brad Allen, DII ASCONA Inc

Track: MANAGEMENT ISSUES - Operations Management

ABSTRACT --- Issues shared by the aluminum extrusion industry today are quite
overwhelming, and include price deflation, overcapacity, increased competition from lowwage
markets, a tighter supply chain, increasingly complex profiles, and more sophisticated
quality standards. The current situation for most aluminum extrusion facilities is a reactive
stance to real-time profile measurement, so when out-of-tolerance problems occur, costs
rise, productivity declines, and customer satisfaction is compromised. This paper sets a new
vision for the aluminum extrusion industry and discusses a quality measurement
breakthrough needed that will reduce out-of-tolerance problems, optimize production-cycle
time, and support more complex profile designs.
