ABSTRACT --- Reliability is the highest priority for suppliers of the automotive industry.
Quality management systems can help to establish stable and reliable processes in
extrusion plants. The automotive companies with their high demands on quality,
reproducibility and cost performance in 1999 agreed on a new standard: ISO/TS 16949.
This standard can be used to optimize structures and processes in a company. An
essential part is the strong focus on targets, which have to be defined for all relevant
processes and permanently evaluated on their efficiency. During 2002 and 2004, the
quality management systems of the European extrusion plants of Corus Aluminium have
been adapted to the level of ISO/TS 16949. The development of the extrusion plant in
Bitterfeld, Germany, demonstrates the effects obtainable. By consistent application of the
tools offered by ISO/TS 16949, new products with high quality and optimal metallurgical
properties could be developed in short time for customers manufacturing forged chassis
parts for the cars.
