ABSTRACT --- Aluminum extrusions are routinely described by alloy and
temper designations derived from aluminum industry standards to facilitate
communications. Aluminum extruders need to understand the aluminum
industry standards system and how it applies to aluminum extrusions. This
paper describes the role of The Aluminum Association in administering
American National Standards for aluminum and the procedures that are followed
to maintain the integrity of aluminum industry standards. Specifically, it covers
how aluminum alloys and tempers are registered. It explains how extrusion
product standards and associated information are developed, disseminated, and
harmonized with international standards.
