Technological Upgrade of Hindalco Extrusion Equipment for Maintaining Leadership Status in the Indian Industry

Jitendra Pal Singh, Hindalco Industries Limited

Track: MANAGEMENT ISSUES - Globalization

ABSTRACT --- A wide gap exists between the demand and available installed
capacity of extrusion in India. This has made the sector very competitive. In such an
environment, to survive and grow, it is imperative to be highly cost efficient, bringing
economies of scale, focus on niche markets, higher value addition by producing hard
alloys, use of better engineering designs, and the best of customer services. Hindalco
has been working continuously to meet higher quality standards by strict process
control and modernization of manufacturing facilities and simultaneously improving
production efficiency. To ensure good feedstock billets for quality extrusions, the
Wagstaff Air Slip casting station equipped with inline degassing and filtration was
installed in the year 1997. The extrusion presses have been modernized in a phased
manner and equipped with state-of-the-art PLC-controlled mechanical and thermal
features. The die shop was completely modernized with CAD/CAM from the world’s
best suppliers. The importance of updated communication technology has been
realized with installation of planning and scheduling software in the first phase. Further
implementation of ERP is in progress. Hindalco is now fully equipped to meet the
growing quality requirements of extrusion supplies in the domestic and export markets.
