ABSTRACT --- Due to an exponential growth rate in aluminum consumption in China
since 1990, it now is the second largest consumer of aluminum in the world after the USA.
Business opportunities for aluminum, especially aluminum extrusions, in China are
expected to grow at an average annual rate of 10 percent, with total consumption
projected to double by 2010 to the total consumption level of the USA. The average
annual growth rate of the aluminum extrusion industry in China is about 24.2 percent, and
now China ranks as the second largest producer of aluminum extrusion sin the world.
Statistics on Chinese aluminum semis output and import/export of extrusions are
presented for the period 1990-2004. Business opportunities for equipment suppliers and
American extruders are ripe, given the strong growth and investment opportunities that
the Chinese marker presents. Aluminum production and consumption data are given for
building and construction, transportation, electronic, and furniture segments of the
Chinese market. Direct foreign investment (DFI) in the Chinese aluminum extrusion
industry is relatively low at present and offers a bright future.
