Flying Cut Puller Without Hand-Off

ABSTRACT --- At a well known German extruder, OMAV has recently installed a new
type of flying cut double puller. The puller consists of two overhead puller carriages and
one flying cut saw that is installed on the opposite side of the run-out from the operator.
As the weld mark approaches, the waiting puller catches the extrusion and begins to
pull, the saw blade cuts and immediately retracts itself, and the puller continues the
extrusion cycle without having to hand-off the profile to the other puller. In this way we
have avoided a delicate point of the traditional flying cut system: the hand off and the
necessary synchronization of the two pullers. Other advantages (besides the simplicity)
are: Reliability – if one of the two pullers is out of operation, the user can go on using
the saw and the other puller; Flexibility – in case of very high extrusion speed, one can
work in the traditional way, with a positionable hot saw and double puller.
