ABSTRACT --- Automation of new extruders or extruders already in operation is of
interest because: a) the enhanced product quality achieved can open the doors to new
market sectors, b) tight control of process parameters possible allows production
increase, c) automation offers better insight into the extrusion process. An automation
system for production optimization based on iterative learning control proposed in
ET2000 has been developed, fabricated, installed and put into continuous operation in
industrial extruders of the SAPA Group. It features three prominent functions: control
task; data acquisition, evaluation and archiving task; and visualization task. Technical
and operational aspects of extruder automation in general and of implemented system
in particular are presented. The latter has yielded an increase of seven percent of the
mean extrusion speed.
