ABSTRACT --- Non contact temperature measurement has been used for many years in
direct-fired billet heating furnaces for copper and brass extrusion. This technology has not
been available for the aluminum industry because of physics challenges and application
issues. This paper reviews the challenges of non-contact temperature measurement in
aluminum. It then describes a robust system for aluminum furnaces that overcomes these
challenges and provides the necessary reliability for production applications.
