ABSTRACT --- Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) can give your new or existing extrusion
press the performance boost it needs. VFD is the energy-saving alternative to a standard
servo-control system. The VFD system regulates the main motors so that they use only
the required horsepower for a given activity. VFDs reduce the load during inactive press
times. When the load is needed, the VFDs accelerate the motors to speed without
imposing on the electrical system. Modifying your current extrusion press with VFDs can
provide tremendous energy savings, improve reliability and pump life, significantly reduce
maintenance, utilize less expensive fixed-delivery pumps, provide less heat generation to
the oil, and improve the electrical system power factor. In addition, the cost may be
subsidized by your local utility.
