ABSTRACT --- When building a new plant or making changes to an existing extrusion plant, it is important to consider what new technology may become available in the future, in order to insure against early obsolescence and to insure that the manufacturing plant will remain competitive as far as possible into the future. But how is it possible to forecast the extrusion technology of the future? Each equipment supplier insists that what he is selling is now the wave of the future and will remain so. Taking a look at past trends, going back 20 to 30 years, this information can be used to plan ahead in light of general trends in industrial technology. The fact that aluminum extrusion is now a mature industry, and changes tend to be evolutionary (that is, small and incremental) instead of revolutionary, also assists in predicting future trends. One other purpose of this paper is to suggest a possible agenda a To-Do List of opportunities for those working on technical development of extrusion plant equipment.
