Special Purpose Extrusion Press for the Production of Curved Profiles

ABSTRACT --- Rounding during extrusion is a new technology developed by the Chair of
Forming Technology in Dortmund. The radii of curved profiles are limited by the guiding
tool and the distance between the profile leaving and the leading edges of the platen. A
special extrusion press for the production of curved profiles with small radii has been
developed by SMS Eumuco GmbH in Leverkusen. The main cylinder can be pushed in
one way through the large port of the casting. The tool pack can be shifted into a superdimensioned
pressure plate within the counterplaten. The distance between the section
exit and the mouth of the platen can be significantly decreased. Thus, small radii of curved
profiles can be extruded. The container housing is equipped with circulating roller guides.
Thereby, the guide of the container holder experiences low wear and friction and has high
precision. One advance and pullback cylinder has been affixed to the plunger. This
solution does not require a moving crosshead. Free motion of the container housing and
the container holder can be ensured during thermal expansion by special mounting.
Hence, a shift will not occur between the middle axis of the container and the middle axis
of the stem.
