ABSTRACT --- The front-loading technology for aluminium extrusion presses means
charging of the billet between stem and die, and then moving the container over the billet
to seal with the die. The significant advantage of this principle is the symmetrical
upsetting of the billet, leading to more precise extrusions, with better surface quality,
compared to conventional, back loading presses. A second way to raise the precision is
to optimize the alignment of stem and main cylinder. This can be achieved by introducing
the tandem cylinder design, where two pistons are mounted on the same axis, leading to
a system with high resistance against transverse forces.
