ABSTRACT --- We are all involved in the day-to-day struggle to increase
productivity and reduce costs. The quality and productivity of extrusion presses
have changed considerably during the last 10 years. Whereas 10 years ago the
productivity of the extrusion press with a power of about 2000 tons was 1200
kg/h, today we are dealing with 1600 kg/h of productivity. The main reason for
this increase is the reduction of dead time and numerous other production
parameters and design modifications at the press. As a result, new grades of tool
steels and design concepts are required for containers, which are the heart of
every extrusion press. Tailored to those specific requirements, material selection,
shrinking technology, heating and cooling systems, and mechanical designs
essentially determine the make-up of the economy. Containers for direct and
indirect extrusion presses are subject to complicated load cycles.
