ABSTRACT --- The three main locations for non-contact, infrared thermometers
(IRT’s) within the aluminum extrusion process are on the incoming heated billets, and
at the die and quench exits. Each of these poses a different set of problems and
requirements which will be briefly discussed. A rapid growth is being seen in the
deployment of IRT’s, largely due to the potential of a new generation of applicationspecific
instruments. These allow constant die exit temperature to be maintained
together with control of quench rate. Results from field trials by the author’s group and
by press engineers are presented to demonstrate the validity of these claims. The
paper will show field test data from a recently developed, integrated thermometry
system, which also provides real-time, continuous, display and output of quench rate,
as well as explaining the care required of press engineers in the utilization of this
