ABSTRACT --- One of the inhibitors to the increased use of aluminum
extrusions in structural applications has been a lack of knowledge regarding the
welding of aluminum, relevant codes and standards, inspection of aluminum
weldments, and the educational and training materials that are available. For the
use of aluminum extrusions in structural applications to grow, extruder sales
managers, among others, need to become familiar with these welding-related
resources in order to help their customers and potential customers. To
accomplish that objective, this paper discusses current and evolving aluminumspecific
educational materials, national codes and standards, and activities
available through the Aluminum Association and the American Welding Society
that support the use of welded aluminum. All of these tools are useless if the
industry that they have been designed to help support doesn’t know that they
exist or how they can be used.
