Innovative Anodizing and Coating Technologies for Processes and Plants of the Future

ABSTRACT --- Many innovative aluminum-finishing processes have been
studied and developed in this new millennium. The main innovative technologies
are in the direction of automation, ecology, quality, productivity, cost reduction
and new finishes. Our company has studied the ideal anodizing and coating lines
of the future where all these features are applied. As regards anodizing, automatic
racking and unracking, full automation of the process, new mechanical finishes,
recovery of chemicals, anodizing with energy saving, new colors (the ability of
producing different colors on anodized aluminum also for architectural market
has increased progressively in the last years offering to the market the possibility
to choose between many light-fast colors), room temperature nickel-free sealing,
and, finally, a new concept line—different from classical horizontal and vertical
lines for profiles—will be presented. An innovative zero discharge system for the
wastes will be also described. Coating of aluminum is younger than anodizing,
but many new technologies have been studied in this new century and will be
introduced in the next future years: ecological processes for pre-treatment
(including mechanical treatment for surface preparation instead of chemical
attack and passivation without chrome), alternative pre-treatment plants, and also
new concept lines; a mixture between a horizontal and vertical plant with
optimized productivity, quality, and investment/operational costs.
