ABSTRACT --- The manufacturing technique ExtruForm® offers advantages
for aluminum extrusion applications, including an optimum design for
automotive chassis parts. The performance of chassis parts is strongly controlled
by the costs in the process chain from melt to final-shaped product. The reduction
of processing time due to the in-line heat treatment integrated with mechanical
operations like forming is the main step forward. The basic understanding of the
material behavior during processing time, temperature, and deformation is the
background for the development of new manufacturing lines. In comparison with
other aluminum alloys, the AA6082 base alloy shows a lot of advantages: highly
formable, corrosion resistant, and exhibiting high strength in combination with
good ductility. The principle of microstructure control is a key issue since the
microstructure and the final properties of the product are closely linked. In the
Raufoss forming process, ExtruForm®, the material may have better properties
as final-shaped product when compared with traditional manufacturing
techniques, comparable to forgings. The mechanical strength is shown to be more
than 15-percent higher and the cost-saving potential is also significant.
