Extrusion Simulation as the Way to Close the Loop in Die Design

ABSTRACT --- The use of aluminum for extruding profiles has been
increasing during the past decades; thanks to its characteristics, this metal is
more widely used in many applications, thus increasing the demand for
aluminum. For this reason, extruders have to be competitive in terms of
productivity and quality: die optimization is the keystone to having highquality
extrudable profiles, putting die makers in an important role. Staying
one step ahead is achieved by investments in new technologies and design
tools. In the last ten years, Phoenix has significantly improved the process to
produce well-designed and closer-needed dies using Finite Element Method
(FEM) simulation, which is the most important tool (but not the only one)
that Phoenix has developed together with its partner MTD. The result is a
virtual extrusion press that is helpful in giving well-adapted solutions: new
die optimizations and existing die productivity improvements, problemsolving
support with the analysis and post-processing of results. In this article
two die case studies are reported, showing how simulation and other tools
were the missing part to having a closed loop in the design procedure. With
this advantage, valuable die makers can not only simulate dies, but they can
give a complete experienced-solution product.
