ABSTRACT --- With market changes continuing to demand better product
characteristics, aluminum product managers are forced into adjusting alloy
chemistries, and in some cases changing to different alloys altogether. These
improved alloy chemistries can result in significant challenges to extruders and
casters, including increased scrap rates and a need for tighter controls over alloy
chemistries and industrial practices. A combination of metallurgical analysis
techniques—including optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and
transmission electron microscopy—are used to explain these challenges from a
fundamental, metallurgical basis.
