O2 Enhanced Combustion for Aluminum Melting Furnaces

ABSTRACT --- In aluminum melting furnaces, oxygen (O2)-enhanced
combustion can increase melt rate and reduce melt energy costs, especially with
today’s higher natural gas prices. Flue gas volumes are also reduced, which can
reduce dust emissions, reduce baghouse temperatures and provide increased
baghouse capacity. Nitrous-oxide (NOx) emissions can also be reduced. Given
their experience with O2 combustion installations in well-charged reverbs, directcharged
reverbs, and rotary aluminum melting furnaces, Air Liquide and ACI
have developed and implemented 100-percent oxy burners, and variable-ratio
air/oxy burners. The selection of burner type will depend on furnace
configuration, type of charge materials, objectives, and fuel price. In this paper,
O2 combustion technology will be reviewed, and results from several installations
will be summarized.
