ABSTRACT --- The paper will in brief describe the basic features of noncontact
Electromagnetic Stirring (EMS), with industrial results from 100
customer installations in aluminum melting and holding furnaces, being;
productivity increase of up to 25 percent, gas savings of up to 15 percent, and
dross reduction of up to 25 percent, with rapid homogenization of temperature
and chemical analysis, as well as reduction of manual stirring, raking operations,
and maintenance. SAPA Heat Transfer, Finspång, Sweden, will report on their
work to improve and optimize the aluminum melting operation. The project
objectives and implementation of EMS at an existing melting furnace will be
discussed. Collected long-term data from furnace operations have been evaluated
and important results will be presented. Recent developments and applications
for EMS in aluminum will also be outlined, such as the combined use of EMS
and oxyfuel burners for additional benefits in energy consumption and
productivity, as well as how EMS has been applied on two-chamber and sidewell
