Degassing Technology A Review of Design and Operational Considerations for Effective Removal of Hydrogen in Molten Aluminum

ABSTRACT --- Hydrogen is the only gas that is readily soluble in aluminum at
casting temperatures and must be removed to levels low enough to meet
customer demand. Without adequate removal the final product properties, such
as fatigue life and surface appearance, can be negatively impacted. Spinning
nozzle, inert gas technology, has evolved as the most common and cost-effective
method of hydrogen removal. There are several different variations to the design
and operation of the standard spinning nozzle method of degassing. These
variations will be explored and their impact on degassing efficiencies will be
discussed. Also, several key operational variables that have been determined to
be relevant to the successful degassing of aluminum will be reviewed.
