ABSTRACT --- The 6xxx alloys represent more than 70 percent of the extrusion
market in North America. Alcan has successfully introduced new alloys in this
family that offer improved productivity for the customer while maintaining
mechanical and other performance characteristics. Some of these alloys were
previously registered with the Aluminum Association, but were new to the U.S.
market, for example AA6060, AA6005A, AA6463A. Others were newly
registered, such as Alcan’s long life alloys AA3130, AA3012A, and highperformance
alloys such as AA6360. Another recent development is a series of
alloys that impart consistent matte finish to anodized extrusions, alleviating one
of the major deficiencies in this market, color mismatch. Alcan’s research has
identified a range of impure elements that must be controlled for successful
performance in this application. Significant volumes of new alloys have been
shipped to various extruders, and their continued satisfaction with Alcan matte
alloys has demonstrated the success and acceptance of these alloys in the
