Track: BILLET PROCESS and EQUIPMENT - Alloy Development

ABSTRACT --- In the world of extrusion, shapes become more complex and
tolerances become more demanding every year; achieving tolerances whilst
holding correct quenching thus becomes increasingly challenging. This paper
will give some insight in finding the best alloys that maximize extrudability
while maintaining or improving functional properties. This can be achieved by
using metallurgically optimized alloys such as 6005A in specific applications
where traditionally 6061 alloy has been used. In addition, this paper highlights
the advantages of substituting alloys 6005 or 6105 with alloy 6005A. At the heart
of this approach is the belief that an extruder should be selling performance and
functionality, not alloy chemistries. Furthermore, a decision matrix will be
shown where the focus is to choose the right alloy for an application, based on
the property requirement. An example will also be given, showing some of the
benefits that can be gained using optimized alloys for the right application. In this
respect, also the selection of the process parameters in the extrusion plant, such
as the billet preheating practice, extrusion- and cooling-conditions, as well as
ageing practice are of major importance.
