Upcoming Structural Design Rule Changes Impacting Aluminum Extrusions

J. Randolph Kissell, The TGB Partnership, Hillsborough, NC, USA
Michael Skillingberg, The Aluminum Association, Arlington, VA, USA

ABSTRACT --- The Aluminum Association’s Aluminum Design Manual
(ADM)[1] contains the Specification for Aluminum Structures, which is being
completely reorganized for its next publication. Since compliance with this
Specification is required by the International Building Code[2], these changes will
directly affect virtually all building applications of aluminum extrusions in the
United States. The Specification’s reorganization unifies the formerly separate
allowable stress design method and the load and resistance factor design method,
and parallels the American Institute of Steel Construction’s approach to steel
design[3]. This paper previews the upcoming changes scheduled to be published
in 2010.
