Increasing The Use Of Extrusions For Electrical Applications Technical And Economic Considerations

Peter Pollak, PE, The Aluminum Association, Inc., Arlington, Virginia, USA

Track: MANAGEMENT ISSUES - Market

ABSTRACT --- When most electrical engineers, designers, specifiers, and
contractors think of materials, copper and steel may be the only metals that come
to mind. With recent unprecedented increases in the cost of copper and steel,
users were faced with shortages, drawn out delivery times and price increases
passed on to them from their suppliers. This paper provides technical
information about the relevant physical properties and characteristics of copper,
aluminum and steel. It addresses some common misconceptions about aluminum
in electrical applications, reviews some of the current electrical uses of aluminum
extrusions, and discusses reliability issues and economic considerations. This
paper shows how the characteristics of aluminum and extrusions combine to
meet the needs of the electrical construction industry. It concludes by suggesting
a program of activities to educate the various audiences in the electrical industry
about the advantages of using aluminum extrusions to meet their needs.
