ABSTRACT --- In an ET ‘04 paper, this author made a case for a new, threshold
model for distortion control in the quenching process. A presentation at the
Aluminum Extruders Council Process Optimization Workshop built on the
threshold model, and provided specific operational details. This paper details a
completed Progressive Quenching methodology, with additional insights and
expanded explanations. This paper provides a qualitative analysis of the
quenching process, and lays out the principles of progressive quenching. The
progressive quenching process effectively decouples the two requirements for
quenching systems: distortion control and metallurgical properties. The paper
details the general requirements for quenching equipment that are compatible
with progressive quenching. Equally important, this paper provides a set of
guidelines for extrusion line operators. These guidelines give operators a process
to follow when dealing with difficult shapes.
