Performance Enhancement of Tool Lube Systems

James Dyla, AMCOL Corporation, Hazel Park, MI, USA

Track: EXTRUSION EQUIPMENT - Container & Tooling

ABSTRACT --- There are currently three basic lube system designs used to
automatically lubricate metal working tools used in and around the aluminum
extrusion press. These systems are generally described as air atomizing,
injection metering, and electrostatic powder; primary applications for these lube
systems include dummy blocks, butt shears, log shears, and saws. This
presentation will first differentiate these three system types and their
applications. A more thorough description of each type will follow; the
presentation of each type will encompass the basic designs available in each
category, proper installation parameters in order to maximize system efficiency,
accessories that can enhance performance, preventative maintenance procedures,
and other best practices in the industry. The overall purpose of this presentation
will attempt to define ways to improve system reliability and functionality that
should lead to reduced downtime, improved product quality, and a safer working
environment.
