Extrusion Container Technology From Yesterday Until Tomorrow

ABSTRACT --- The development of containers for the aluminum extrusion
process has shown significant change during the past years. Till this day two part
containers without any internal heating system are in use. But with the increasing
requirements for isothermal extrusion, this technology is not sufficient today. To
reach this goal, a uniform container temperature over the length as well as
between top and bottom is a must. The installation of zone heating systems and
even cooling systems inside the container enables the press user, to optimize
extrusion parameters with regard to extrusion temperature, pressure, and speed.
But this development for containers also necessitates adequate operational and
controls, otherwise early breakdown of containers can occur. Reasons for those
failures will be presented and suggestions how to avoid them will be given. The
advantages and disadvantages of the various technologies will be shown to give
the press user decision support for the optimum selection of a container design.
