ABSTRACT --- Hydraulic fluid is the lifeblood of a modern extrusion press, and the
condition of that fluid is critical to the reliability and operating cost of the
extrusion press. Hydraulic oil is frequently dirty or contaminated with air or
water, resulting in excessive downtime and maintenance costs. This paper
discusses the various causes of contamination as well as the means to prevent and
remove contamination from the lifeblood of the extrusion press system.
