ABSTRACT --- Modern tube presses are characterized by a clear and readily
accessible arrangement of the required auxiliary devices. New design
approaches, such as a three-axis multi-function handling manipulator increase the
degree of automation, while flexibility and operational reliability are improved at
the same time. The concentric arrangement of the piercer in the main ram results
in a tube press of compact length, and the precise centric guiding provides ideal
prerequisites for achieving minimum tube tolerances. New extrusion plants for
the production of seamless tubes and seamless profiled tubes by the direct or
indirect extrusion method have been installed mainly in the Asian region. The
plant sizes range from 10-mega Newton (MN) presses, up to machines with
nominal extrusion forces of 75MN and higher.
