ABSTRACT --- With increasing demands on the quality of extruded profiles,
specifying and maintaining best values and tolerances of process variables during
extrusion are becoming mandatory. Here, automation and control help in
complying with prescribed constraints on all the process variables and
simultaneously ensure minimum extrusion time. The constraints include, besides
billet and extrusion temperatures, extrusion force and extrusion speed, and the
rate of cooling of the profile which is of special interest for automotive and
aerospace applications. The last constraint affects the allowable billet
temperature and extrusion speed. To control the cooling rate besides ensuring
iso-thermal and iso-speed extrusion, a comprehensive control scheme based on
iterative learning control has been implemented and incorporated into the
automation system ‘MoMAS®’. The experience gained in 15 industrial aluminum
extruder plants and the continuing interaction with users have made it possible to
evolve an automation system which is easy to install, simple to use, and easy to
look after. Some aspects of the development, installation, and use of automation
systems in various plants are presented.
