ABSTRACT—This paper is a case study on how to utilize data and analyses to calculate optimal
mill lengths and log lengths in an aluminum extrusion operation. By using a systematic means to
review all of the various profiles run on various presses, optimal mill lengths can be calculated to
reduce the total costs (of time and scrap). Through simple analytic evaluation, proper log lengths
can be determined for planning and purchasing decisions.
