ABSTRACT—Every extrusion system can be improved. There are no exceptions. New
technologies using remote infra-red pyrometry and enhanced digitization continue to make
improvement possible. With the unique strength-to-weight ratio and incomparable recyclability of
aluminum alloy, plus a considerable upgrading in contemporary technology which broadens the
the scope of its use, we may just now be on the brink of a new stage of unmatched potential in the
ongoing evolution of light metal extrusion. Fundamental analysis of extrusion requires an
awareness of how the alloy being extruded will react to varying conditions of the process. This
paper illustrates the importance of flow stress, or more so, an understanding of flow stress and its
sensitivity not only to the alloy, but to the temperature and strain rate. Such knowledge is an
important component in the technical toolbox of a Superextruder, who by nature applies in-depth
technical know-how and state-of-the-art technology to achieve optimum productivity and
