ABSTRACT—This paper will disclose how to utilize linear programming techniques to
maximize extrusion throughput or minimize cost. This is accomplished by properly structuring
the mathematical system defining the optimization's goals and constraints, including at least the
following considerations: profiles and quantities to be produced for customers in various
locations; possible extrusion equipment to utilize; existing and possible tooling
considerations (including # of holes) for profiles on various equipment; profile performance
(productivity, scrap, cost, etc...) for various equipment/tooling combinations; and transportation
costs. Realistic example data will be used to bridge the gap between conceptual and practical
application of the methodology.
