ABSTRACT—The paper describes a very systematic work on how extrudability and mechanical
properties are influenced by the alloy composition and aging practice. It shows how the optimum
composition with regard to extrudability and mechanical properties is linked to the most effective
type of hardening precipitates, and that the optimum magnesium/silicon (Mg/Si) ratio is way
outside the AA6063 alloy window. In addition, the paper shows the positive effect of the special
aging process developed by Hydro Aluminium on the age hardening response of the alloys, and
how this can be used to further optimize the alloy composition for better extrudability. It is
discussed how regions that are traditionally using the AA6063 alloy (USA and the Pacific Rim),
instead of the AA6060 or the newly-registered AA6660 alloy as the standard alloy for medium
strength extruded profiles, are creating a handicap for their own extrusion industry.
